History and Characteristics

Of Asian origin, it is the only species of parakeet widely distributed on several continents in the wild. Its original specimen presents a green plumage, long and tapered tail. Being from the parrots family, the beak is strong and curved, assuming a bright red hue in this species. Males have a black and pink ring on the neck that gives the species its name. This arises when they reach sexual maturity at around 2 years.

This species has Asian and African subspecies that have small differences between them. In the wild ring necked parakeets live in large flocks with more than a hundred elements and their average life expectancy varies between 12 to 15 years. In captivity they can thrive up to 30 or even 40 years.
